The loveliest thing happened yesterday โ
15 July 2026

I was having lunch with my parents and two of their friends at a cafe, when a stranger approached the table.
"Excuse me," she said. "Are you Jack Heath?"
"Yes?" I replied warily.
"I'm reading Kill Your Boss at the moment," she said. "It's so good!"
I forget what I said after thatโI was still a bit startled. Hopefully it was something gracious. Either way, she left smiling. I think I did OK.
This sort of thing happens to me occasionally. Canberra is a small town. My parents rarely get to see it, though, and having their friends there made it even better.
I suspect I was hard to raise. I was strange, secretive, and sullen (I still am). But Mum and Dad never made me feel like a difficult child. Their years of effort were invisible, at least to me. I'm so glad they finally get to show off a bit.
Anyway, this concludes the test of my new mailing list provider! Did it work?
Warmly (but strangely) yours,
